Looking at the top of Ploskiy (Flat) and Ostry (Sharp) Tolbachik volcanoes it is hard to believe that Flat Tolbachik is an active one. There are two volcanic calderas at the top of the volcano. The top looks like it was cut down, that is why the volcano got this name. The first caldera was formed during the powerful eruption about 6500 years ago, its diameter is about 3 kilometers. There is a new caldera inside the old one; the depth is about 400 m. and the diameter is 1.8 km. This new caldera appeared in the result of BFTE in 1975-76.
Flat Tolbachik's height is 3140 m. The ascent takes about 9-11 hours. You'll have a snack at the top and there will be enough time to have rest after ascending.

KURIL LAKE. EXCURSION PROGRAM

During the tour, you will be able to take a closer look at the migration of the Far Eastern salmon and watch bird colonies.

Kurile Lake is located in the southern part of the peninsula on the territory of the South Kamchatka Reserve. The lake itself is a caldera, is of volcanic origin, and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On the one hand, the majestic Ilyinsky volcano, which has an almost perfect shape, looks at the lake. During eruptions, its lava flows descended directly into the Kuril Lake, changing the landscape and creating picturesque coves and bays. In the center of the lake there is a rocky island Heart of Alaid, very similar in shape to the heart, and on the islands in the middle of the lake there is one of the largest colonies of the slaty-backed gull in freshwater.

After the tour return to the camp. Dinner and rest.

KURIL LAKE. KUTKHINY BATY

Breakfast.

Walking tour to Kutkhin Baty.

In the area of Kurilskoye Lake, there is a geological object, amazing in its structure and beauty - Kutkhiny Baty. These are monumental pumice formations that appeared at a time when, during frequent volcanic eruptions, acidic, saturated with gases, lava rose to the surface of the earth and cooled, forming a porous rock. Over time, the rocks, undermined by wind and water, acquired their current shape.

An interesting and unusual shape of the rocks is explained in the legend of the indigenous people of Kamchatka - the Itelmens. Once the wise raven Kutkh left his boats on the shore to dry and forgot about them. For the Itelmens, the raven Kutkh was the main god, and the word "bat" was used to refer to a long boat. Therefore, “Kutkhins Baty” can be translated as “Boats of the God Kutkha”.

After the tour, exit from the territory of the reserve and get into the car. Departure in the opposite direction.

Overnight at Pauzhetka, dinner.
