During eruptions, its lava flows descended directly into the Kuril Lake, changing the landscape and creating picturesque coves and bays. In the area of Kurilskoye Lake, there is a geological object, amazing in its structure and beauty - Kutkhiny Baty. These are monumental pumice formations that appeared at a time when, during frequent volcanic eruptions, acidic, saturated with gases, lava rose to the surface of the earth and cooled, forming a porous rock. Over time, the rocks, undermined by wind and water, acquired their current shape.
An interesting and unusual shape of the rocks is explained in the legend of the indigenous people of Kamchatka - the Itelmens. Once the wise raven Kutkh left his boats on the shore to dry and forgot about them. For the Itelmens, the raven Kutkh was the main god, and the word "bat" was used to refer to a long boat. Therefore, “Kutkhins Baty” can be translated as “Boats of the God Kutkha”.
